UK – Private Flying
In 2002 the "National Private Pilot Licence" (NPPL) scheme
was introduced in the UK. The NPPL allows individuals to train for and
gain ratings for single-engine piston aircraft weighing less than 2000
kgs (approximately 4,400 pounds), self launching motor gliders and microlights.
The applicant pilot must hold a self-declaration of medical
fitness which subsequently needs to be endorsed by a doctor who has access
to the applicant's medical records. A pilot with diabetes (Type 1 Diabetes)
can fly solo or with another qualified pilot on type (a safety pilot).
Pre-flight and in-flight blood sugar testing requirements must be met.
